You’ve plotted the course, stocked the cooler, and double-checked your tunes, but have you checked your trailer? More often than not, RV owners overlook critical areas before departing, assuming they’re good to go. But even small problems, like uneven tire wear or a spongy brake pedal, can create problems on the road.
At West Michigan Towable Solutions, we’ve witnessed it all: wrecked axles, destroyed bearings, electrical failures, even trailers that lost their attachments due to bad hitches.
The good news? A lot of it can be avoided.
Brake Performance
Your trailer’s brake system doesn’t just stop. It stabilizes it, keeping it from swaying and reducing strain on your tow vehicle. Over time, pads wear out, magnets weaken and controllers shift out of trim. If you’re braking unevenly, slowly or jerkily, that’s your signal.
Prior to every trip, inspect your brake controller settings and listen for grinding or dragging sounds. Spongy brake stops or a “push” on your trailer can mean your brakes aren’t functioning properly. At WMTS, we test every part of your trailer brake system, from shoes and drums to the electrical signal from your tow vehicle, to help you brake safely and smoothly.
Tire Condition and Pressure
Your trailer tires are your sole connection with the road and they work harder than most folks appreciate. Even if your tread is acceptable, issues such as dry rot, bulging sidewalls or internal belt rupture can still lead to a blowout. Underinflated tires overheat rapidly, and overinflated tires lose traction and wear unevenly.
Check tire pressure when tires are cold and consult the correct PSI rating for your loaded vehicle. Check also the production date on the sidewall. Tires older than 5–6 years are not safe, regardless of mileage. WMTS can inspect your tires’ age, damage, and weight load suitability to get them roadworthy.
Suspension and Axle Health
Your suspension system suspends shocks, holds your RV in balance and keeps your rig from bouncing down the road like a carnival ride. With time, the repeated vibration and stress of weight cause worn-out bushings, broken leaf springs or twisted axles, all of which disrupt your alignment and jeopardize your tires, brakes, and frame.
If your trailer sits crooked to one side, feels very bouncy or clunks along, it’s likely in need of a closer look. We check axle alignment with precision instruments and inspect all suspension components for cracks, fatigue or looseness. Repairing it can prevent downstream repair bills of thousands of dollars.
Lights and Wiring
Dancing tail lights, dim running lights or non-functional turn signals might not seem important, but they’re crucial to safety and regulation. RVs and trailers are subjected to a lot of vibration and exposure to the weather, so connectors and wiring can work loose, rust or short out after a while.
Before each trip, do a full light check. Plug in your trailer and test every signal, brake, marker, and interior light. If anything’s dim or dead, it may be a bad ground, dirty connector or internal wiring fault. WMTS offers full diagnostics and repairs on RV electrical systems, so you’re never left in the dark. Literally.
Hitch, Coupler and Safety Chains
If your hitch setup is not correct, everything else is irrelevant. A rusty coupler, a worn hitchball or misfit safety chains will have catastrophic implications. Like your trailer stripping loose at 60 mph. Even old RVers come up short of checking these components with regular maintenance.
Check your coupler for rust and damage, make sure your latch locks up tight, and verify your safety chains are crossed under the tongue and attached with proper tension. We examine every inch of your hitch system, tongue weight distribution and sway control to provide you with total confidence on the road.
Travel With Confidence
You wouldn’t miss an oil change prior to a cross-country trip, so don’t miss an RV checkup prior to towing thousands of pounds at highway speeds. The sooner you detect a problem, the better. The best time to find a problem is before it wrecks your trip, destroys your trailer or jeopardizes you and your passengers.
At West Michigan Towable Solutions, pre-trip RV diagnosis is our forte, as the best RV repair in Michigan. We examine the brakes and tires, hitches, electrical systems, and everything in between. We fix what matters. For that weekend trip up north or cross-country excursion, we’ll have your trailer ready when you are.
